Genil

a river in southern Spain, a left tributary of the Guadalquivir. The Genii is 250 km long and drains an area of 8.700 sq km. It rises in the Sierra Nevada, on the northern slopes of Mount Mulhacén, and flows through the Sistema Beticos; its lower course lies in the Andalusian Lowland. The mean flow rate of the Genii is approximately 40 cu m per sec. The water level rises in the winter and spring. The river is used for irrigation. Reservoirs and a hydroelectric power station have been built on the Genii. The cities of Granada, Puente-Genil, and Écija are situated on the river.
