Gigant

a match and furniture complex, one of the largest match-making enterprises of the USSR. Located in Kaluga.

Gigant (Giant) makes matches, furniture, wood-chip slabs, and planed plywood. It opened in 1931 and by 1940 was producing about 10 percent of all the matches made in the USSR. During the Great Patriotic War it was totally destroyed by the fascist German aggressors. After the liberation of Kaluga (Dec. 30, 1941), the restoration of Gigant was begun, and by 1949 it was back in full operation. Gigant has been provided with new equipment, and the technological process of preparing matches is fully mechanized. In 1957 a furniture section opened, in 1960 a section for planed plywood, and in 1964 a wood-chip slab section. In 1969 its output of matches consisted of 1,406,000 standard-accounting cases. A reconstruction and expansion of match production is in the planning stages.
