created in 1969 on the basis of the Pedagogical Institute of Gomel’. In 1971 the University of Gomel’ had seven departments: history and philology, mathematics, physics, soil biology, geology, economics, and physical education. It has a correspondence section, a graduate school, 25 subdepartments, and more than 50 training and scientific research laboratories. In the 1970–71 academic year the university had 5.400 students and more than 300 instructors, including 18 professors and doctors of science and 102 docents and candidates of science.
