freezing rain[¦frēz·iŋ ′rān] (meteorology) Rain that falls in liquid form but freezes upon impact to form a coating of glaze upon the ground and on exposed objects. freezing rainA rain that falls onto surfaces that have subfreezing temperatures and freezes into a sheet or a thin coating of ice. There is little or no air in between the layers of ice. If this coating becomes thick, it can significantly affect the aircraft's performance because it causes additional weight.
