genetic algorithm
genetic algorithmn. An algorithm that solves a problem using an evolutionary approach by generating mutations to the current solution method, selecting the better methods from this new generation, and then using these improved methods to repeat the process.genetic algorithm
genetic algorithm[jə‚ned·ik ′al·gə‚rith·əm] (computer science) A search procedure based on the mechanics of natural selection and genetics. Also known as evolutionary strategy. genetic algorithm(GA) An evolutionary algorithm which generates eachindividual from some encoded form known as a "chromosome" or"genome". Chromosomes are combined or mutated to breed newindividuals. "Crossover", the kind of recombination ofchromosomes found in sexual reproduction in nature, is oftenalso used in GAs. Here, an offspring's chromosome is createdby joining segments choosen alternately from each of twoparents' chromosomes which are of fixed length.
GAs are useful for multidimensional optimisation problems inwhich the chromosome can encode the values for the differentvariables being optimised.
