Bergmann, Carl

(bĕrg`män), 1821–76, German-American musician and conductor. A cellist with the Germania Orchestra, he came with it to the United States in 1850 and subsequently in Boston became its conductor; he later conducted the Handel and Haydn Society there (1852–54). He first conducted the New York Philharmonic Society in 1855 and was its sole conductor from 1865 until 1876.
