GeomyidaeGeomyidae[‚jē·ō′mī·ə‚dē]Geomyidaea family of rodents comprising the gophers (pocket gophers). There are nine living genera and three (or five) extinct genera. Geomyids first appeared in the Miocene epoch. The body length measures up to 20 cm, and the tail length to 8 cm. The coloration is brownish and uniform. The front limbs have powerful claws adapted for digging. A characteristic feature of geomyids are the large, fur-lined cheek pouches, which open externally, not into the mouth. The best known genus is Geomys, which has six or seven species. Geomyids inhabit the open plains in the southern parts of North America.
