Geological Series

a subdivision of the stratigraphic scale, part of a geological system. The rocks making up a series were deposited during an epoch. Each geological series is identified on the basis of typical fossil flora and fauna and is subdivided into stages.

a local, or regional, stratigraphic subdivision. It contains thick and complexly structured strata of sedimentary, igneous, or metamorphic formations or combinations thereof and often corresponds to a single major sedimentary, igneous or tectonic cycle. In scope, a geological series may correspond to a series of the geostratigraphic scale, or it may be larger or smaller than such a series. A geological series is subdivided into suites and has its own geographic name. Examples are the Olekma Series of the Archean in Eastern Siberia and the Asha Series of the Riphean in the Urals.
