Geological Sciences, Institute of

 

(full name, K. I. Satpaev Institute of Geological Sciences), a scientific research institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR.

The Institute of Geological Sciences was organized in 1940 in Alma-Ata; it grew out of the geological section of the former Kazakh branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. It has departments of regional geology, metallogenic studies, geophysics, and seismology, as well as an Altai department in the city of Ust’-Kamenogorsk. Attached to the institute is a republic-level geological museum. Its scientific publications are Trudy (since 1940) and the journal Izvestiia AN Kazakhskoi SSR: Seriia geologicheskaia (Newsletter of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR: Geological Series; since 1944). In 1967 the institute was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor.
