gastrointestinal discomfort experienced by homosexual males; includes abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea caused by enteric bacteria, viruses, fungi, zooparasites, or trauma.
An array of infectious and non-infectious gastrointestinal symptoms which were described in homosexual men prior to AIDS, and thus regarded by some as a disorder a sui generis
Management Acute proctitis—penicillin, probenicid, doxycycline; change to specific agents if organism identified

An array of infectious and non-infectious GI symptoms described in homosexual ♂ before AIDS Clinical Proctalgia 80%, changed bowel habits 50%, condyloma acuminata 52%, cramping diarrhea, bloating, flatulence, nausea & vomiting, adenomatous polyps, fissures, fistulas, hemorrhoids, perirectal abscess, shigellosis, proctitis, rectal ulcers, giardiasis, STDs–eg HSV, syphilis, gonorrhea, C trachomatis; 'gay bowel' organisms include 'gay CLOs', ie Campylobacter-like organisms–eg, C fennelliae and C cinaedi, HPV–associated with anal carcinoma and dysplasia, CMV, HAV, HBV, parasites–eg, Entamoeba histolytica, E coli, Endolimax nana, Enterobius vermicularis, Strongyloides stercoralis, Iodamoeba beutschlii and bacteria–N meningitis, Haemophilus ducreyi, Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp; other findings include rectal dyspareunia, pruritis ani, anal incontinence, trauma–eg secondary to 'fisting' which, like insertion of variably-sized/shaped foreign objects, may cause colorectal perforation and abscess formation Treatment Acute proctitis–penicillin, probenicid, doxycycline, changing to specific agents if organism identified. gay bowel syndrome

The damaging effects on the lower bowel caused by male homosexual practices resulting in injury to, and infection of, the margin of the anus and the rectum from finger or hand insertion (fisting) or from the insertion of other objects. Other features include ANAL FISSURES, and ANAL FISTULAS, haemorrhoids and ulcers.
