Basting Machine

a sewing machine for temporarily fastening parts of an article together. The basting machine forms easily undone chain stitches using one thread, or, in the case of long stitches, shuttle stitches using two threads. The stitches are up to 9 mm long. Special basting machines, such as those for marking lapels or tacking canvas, are produced in the USSR.
