Freedberg, Sydney Joseph

(1914– ) art historian; born in Boston, Mass. He studied at Harvard (B.A. 1936; M.A. 1939; Ph.D. 1940), and taught at many institutions, notably at Harvard beginning in 1953. An author of many books on Renaissance art, he was a curator and director of several museums, including the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (1983).
