Gault [gawlt] Alma E. (1891–1981). American nursing educator and activist for racial equality in nursing. As dean of Meharry Medical College School of Nursing in Nashville, Tennessee, she developed diploma and baccalaureate programs; Meharry also became the first predominantly African American school to become a member of the American Association of Collegiate Schools of Nursing. She was also active in promoting membership of African American students in nursing organizations, as well as being a campaigner for social reform. In addition, she helped organize the Southern Regional Conference of State Leagues of Nursing Education to promote regional planning for nursing education. |
