Fuchs, Vivian Ernest
Born Feb. 11, 1908, in Freshwater, Isle of Wight. British geologist and polar explorer.
Fuchs joined a number of expeditions, including ones to Greenland (1929) and Africa (1930–31, 1931–32). From 1947 to 1950 he led a British antarctic expedition, and from 1956 to 1958 he led a British-New Zealand antarctic expedition. Between November 1957 and March 1958 an expedition team led by Fuchs became the first in history to cross Antarctica on land from Shackleton Base on the Weddell Sea across the South Pole to Scott Base on the Ross Sea.
