Gershun, Aleksandr L’vovich

 

Born Oct. 17 (29), 1868, in the city of Sokotka, Grodno Province, present-day Poland; died May 26 (June 8), 1915, in Petrograd. Russian optician.

Gershun graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1890. From 1902 he was professor of the Artillery Officers’ Class at Kronstadt. His principal works were in applied optics. Gershun perfected a number of optical marine-artillery instruments, and he was the initiator of the domestic manufacture of military optical instruments. In 1914 an optical-mechanical instruments plant was built in St. Petersburg under his direction.
