Golitsyn Layer
Golitsyn Layer
(named after the Russian physicist and geophysicist, B. B. Golitsyn), the lower part of the earth’s upper mantle. It is located at depths ranging approximately from 400 to 900 km. It is characterized by an intensive increase in the velocities of seismic waves. Also conjectured is a rapid increase in density with increasing depth; this phenomenom is explained by elastic compression, the restructuring of crystal lattices, the redistribution of atoms over molecules, and probably a change in chemical composition as the depth increases.
