Gagra Range

a mountain range on the southern slope of the Greater Caucasus, in the Abkhazian ASSR between the Psou and Bzyb’ rivers. Maximum elevation, 3,256 m (Mount Agepsta). A spur of this range at the city of Gagra extends right up to the Black Sea. The Gagra Range is composed for the most part of limestones; in cutting through these limestones, the Zhvava-Kvara, lupshara, and other rivers have formed canyon-shaped valleys. Karst has developed. This range is covered with coniferous and broad-leaved deciduous forests; higher up it has subalpine and alpine meadows. The highway to Lake Ritsa runs through the valleys of the Bzyb’, lupshara, and Gega rivers.
