In southeastern TX, north of Corpus Christi; original county; organized Mar 17, 1836 (prior to statehood) from Old Mexican Municipality. Name Origin: Probably originally of biblical origin from Goliath; also believed to be an anagram from Hidalgo (minus the silent h), referring to Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla (1753-1811), the first promotor of Mexican independence from Spain. Applied to a presidio by the 1829 Congress of Coahuila and Texas.
