GagarinenUKGagarinGagarin(until 1968, Gzhatsk), a city in Smolensk Oblast RSFSR, on the Gzhat’ River (Volga basin). It was renamed in honor of Iu. A. Gagarin, the world’s first cosmonaut. It has a railroad station on the Moscow-Minsk line, 180 km west of Moscow. Population, 16,000 (1970). Gagarin has a branch of a Moscow television plant and a branch of the Moscow Elektrosvet Plant. It also has a dairy and canning combine, a zooveterinary technicum, a pedagogical school, a museum of local lore, and the Iu. A. Gagarin Memorial Museum. Gagarin was founded as a landing for the shipment of grain to St. Petersburg. (The landing was officially opened upon Peter I’s ukase of Nov. 11, 1719.) It became a city in 1776. Gagarin was occupied by the fascist German invaders from Oct. 8, 1941, to March 1943. Gagarinan urban-type settlement in Sevan Raion, Armenian SSR; located on the left bank of the Razdan River. It has a railroad station on the Yerevan-Sevan line. There are plants for repairing power shovels and tower cranes. The settlement was founded in 1961 and named in honor of Iu. A. Gagarin.
