Gates, Thomas S.

Gates, Thomas S. (Sovereign)

(1873–1948) banker, university president; born in Germantown, Pa. He was a partner at Drexel and Company (1918–30) and J. P. Morgan and Company (1921–30) before assuming the presidency of the University of Pennsylvania (1930–44). He reorganized the university's finances, brought athletics under administrative control, and raised educational standards.
