On the northeastern border of NC, northwest of Elizabeth City; organized 1779 (prior to statehood) from Chowan, Hertford, and Perquimans counties. Name Origin: For Gen. Horatio Gates (1728?-1806), Continental Army officer who defeated John Burgoyne (1722-92) at the Battle of Satatoga (1777)
