Bartlett, Robert Abram,
1875–1946, American arctic explorer, b. Brigus, near St. John's, N.L., Canada. He accompanied Robert E. PearyPeary, Robert Edwin, 1856–1920, American arctic explorer, b. Cresson, Pa. In 1881 he entered the U.S. navy as a civil engineer and for several years served in Nicaragua, where he was engaged in making surveys for the Nicaragua Canal.

Click the link for more information. on the expeditions of 1897–98 and 1905–6, and in 1908–9 he accompanied Peary to lat. 87°47'N and was the last white man from whom Peary parted to make his dash for the North Pole. Later he commanded on many arctic voyages of his own, making an annual cruise from 1925 to 1941. His exploring and scientific work in Greenland was especially notable, and he was widely known and admired.
