Arkhangelskii, Aleksandr Aleksandrovich

Born Dec. 17 (29), 1892, in Kazan. Soviet aircraft designer. Hero of Socialist Labor (1947). Doctor of sciences in technology (1940); Honored Worker in Science and Technology of the RSFSR (1947).

Arkhangel’skii entered Moscow University in 1911. He transferred to the Moscow Higher Technical School in 1912 and worked in the aerodynamics laboratory under N. E. Zhukovskii. After graduating from the Moscow Higher Technical School in 1918, he helped found the Central Aerodynamic and Hydrodynamic Institute. Beginning in 1922, Arkhangel’skii worked with A. N. Tupolev; however, he also designed some airplanes independently, for example, the SB and the Ar-2. He became a principal designer in 1940 and the first deputy to the chief designer in 1942.

In 1962, Arkhangel’skii was awarded the Zhukovskii Gold Medal for the Best Work on the Theory of Aviation. He received the State Prize of the USSR in 1941, 1949, and 1952 and the Lenin Prize in 1957. He has been awarded six Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, and six other orders, as well as various medals.
