Ethyl Bromide

(also bromoethane), C₂H₅Br, a colorless liquid with a weak ethereal odor. Ethyl bromide has a melting point of – 119°C, a boiling point of 38.3°C, and a density of 1.459 g/cm³ at 20°C. It is poorly soluble in water.

Ethyl bromide is produced from ethyl alcohol according to the reaction

C₂H₅OH + KBr + H₂SO₄ → C₂H₅Br + KHSO₄ + H₂O

It is used in organic synthesis for the introduction of the ethyl group, C₂H₅—. It is also used as a component of antiknock fluids in gasoline (see).
