Asmolov, Aleksei Nikitich
Born Mar. 17 (30), 1906, in Saratov Province. Soviet major general (1945); member of the CPSU since 1932. Born into the family of a poor peasant.
Asmolov joined the Soviet Army in 1928. He graduated from the M. V. Frunze Military Academy (1939) and from the Academy of the General Staff (1952). During the Great Patriotic War he was one of the leaders of the partisan movement, a member of the Military Council, and a representative of the Central Staff of the partisan movement on the Northwest, Southwest, and Third Ukrainian fronts. From 1941 to 1943 he led the partisan struggle in Leningrad Oblast, where large partisan-controlled regions were created. From 1944 to 1945, Asmolov was commander of the partisan movement in Czechoslovakia where he was sent at the request of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. After the war he was engaged in important work in the Ministry of Interior Affairs. After 1956 he was in the reserves; he has also participated in the work of the Soviet Committee of War Veterans. He was awarded the Order of Lenin, four Orders of the Red Banner, the Orders of Bogdan Khmel’nitskii First Class and of the Red Star, three Czechoslovak orders, and also medals. He is an honorary citizen of the Czechoslovak towns of Banska Bystrica, Martin, Zvolen, and Sliac.
