Calatrava, Order of

a religious order of knights in Spain, founded in Castile in 1158 during the Reconquista, sanctioned by Pope Alexander III in 1164. Its name was derived from the strategically important Calatrava Castle (now in Ciudad Real), which the order had seized from the Moors. Through grants from the Castilian kings, the order acquired great land-holdings. It played an important political role in the country, intervening in questions concerning ascension to the throne. In 1489 the monarchy took over the administration of the order. King Ferdinand V was sanctioned by the pope as the grand master of the Order of Calatrava. The order was dissolved in 1873.
