collision-avoidance system

[kə′lizh·ən ə′vȯid·əns ‚sis·təm] (engineering) Electronic devices and equipment used by a pilot to perform the functions of conflict detection and avoidance.

collision-avoidance system

A noncooperative system providing cockpit indications of all conflicting traffic. The system is meant to alert the pilot about conflicting air traffic. For this purpose, all involved aircraft must be fitted with a secondary surveillance radar (SSR) transponder. The system operates independently of ground-based systems. See airborne collision-avoidance system.
