direct observation of procedural skills

A term for the formal assessment of a specialist trainee’s procedural skills, which is designed to provide feedback on procedural skills essential to the provision of good clinical care. Each specialty has a specified number of DOPS sufficiently important and/or technically demanding enough so as to warrant specific assessment. DOPS are required for each stage of training and must be assessed by an appropriate clinical supervisor (CS). These are kept in hard copy in the trainee’s portfolio and by the CS.
