Dzhabhan

Dzhabhan

a river in the western part of the Mongolian People’s Republic. Length, 808 km; basin area, approximately 150,000 sq km.

Rising on the southern flanks of the Hangai, the Dzhabhan flows through a wide intermontane depression and into the Basin of Large Lakes. Here a natural channel joins it from the left (the Kobdo River basin), providing the runoff from Lakes Hara Usa and Hara Nur, which are fed by the Kobdo River. The Dzhabhan flows in several arms into the Airag Nur, which is connected with the Hirgis Nur by a short natural channel about 2 km long. There is a mild spring high-water, determined by the amount of melting snow, and infrequent summer flash floods, caused by rain. The average volume of water as the river leaves the mountains is 60 cu m per sec. The Dzhabhan’s waters are used in irrigation.
