Field Germination Percent

Field Germination Percent

the ratio of the number of sprouts to the number of seeds sown in a field. The field germination percent depends on the quality, biological characteristics, and storage conditions of the seeds; the soil and weather conditions between sowing and sprouting; and the sowing schedule and depth.

Under the same conditions, a high laboratory germination rate will result in a high field germination percent. When the field germination percent is low, the sprouts are sparse, weed infestation is substantial, disease and pest damage increases, and the plants are weaker and less productive.
