city and region (2016 pop. 156,901), Queensland, NE Australia, on Trinity Bay. It is a principal sugar port of Australia; lumber and other agricultural products are also exported. The city's proximity to the Great Barrier Reef has made it a tourist center. In 1994 the state amalgamated the city with Mulgrave Shire and the tip of Douglas Shire to create one of three new "super cities."

Sugar and bottled tropical juices are produced, and there is a wood-products industry. Cairns is a tourist attraction. Good turnovers of the port was 925,700 tons in 1967–68; sugar, raw-mineral materials, fruits, juices, and wood are exported.
