[′kəd·iŋ ‚tȯrch]Cutting Torch
a tool used for cutting and working metals. The torch consists of preheat and cutting units. The preheat unit is similar to a welding torch and may be equipped with an injector, depending on the pressure of the gas (acetylene, propane-butane mixture, or natural gas) or liquid fuel used. High-pressure torches, torches with internal nozzles, and those that feature external mixing of gases do not have injectors. Normally, a jet of cutting oxygen from a cylindrical nozzle or one with curvilinear generatrices is situated concentrically inside the preheat flame. Cutting torches are manufactured for use in manual and machine cutting, separation oxygen cutting and oxygen machining, flux cutting, and underwater cutting.
