acute brain syndromes

Severe confusional states of sudden onset caused by any circumstance that leads to an inadequate supply of oxygenated blood to the brain. Such causes include HEART FAILURE, coronary thrombosis, severe chest infection, toxic states or severe metabolic disorders. There is clouding of consciousness, disorientation, defects of time perception, failure of logic, delirium, hallucinations and often delusions of persecution. The treatment is that of the underlying cause. Full recovery is common.
