Charadriidae[kə·rə′drī·ə‚dē] (vertebrate zoology) The plovers, a family of birds in the superfamily Charadrioidea. Charadriidae a family of birds of the order Charadriiformes. The family contains almost all the genera included in the suborder, for example, Charadrius, Vanellus, Haematopus, Numenius, Recurvirostra, Totanus, Tringa, and Rostratula. Of the 160 species, 75 are found in the USSR. Some ornithologists place the Haematopus, Ibidorhyncha, Rostratula, and Recurvirostra into a separate family. Charadriidae
