Cache River State Natural Area
Location:In southernmost Illinois, just west of US 45 and south of IL 146, near Vienna.
Facilities:Canoe trail (3-6 miles), bicycle trail (8 miles of the Tunnel HillState Bicycle Trail), hiking trails (18 miles), wetlands center.
Activities:Canoeing, fishing, hiking, bicycling, birding, wildlife viewing, hunting, interpretive programs.
Special Features:Among the outstanding natural features in the area are massivecypress trees with bases that exceed 40 feet in circumference. Many aremore than 1,000 years old, including one that has been designated as astate champion due to its huge trunk girth, towering height, andheavily branched canopy. Wetlands in the area are so important tomigratory waterfowl and shorebirds that they've been designated aWetland of International Importance.The area provides habitat for morethan 100 plant and animal species that are listed by the state ofIllinois as endangered or threatened.
