DeMar, Clarence

DeMar, Clarence (Harrison)

(1888–1958) marathon runner; born in Madeira, Ohio. Nicknamed, "Mr. Marathon," he won the Boston marathon seven times (1921–24, 1927–28, 1930), placed second three times, and third twice. He won the bronze medal in the 1924 Olympic marathon. He continued to run the Boston marathon until the end of his life and since this was still a time when the race was regarded as fit for only a relatively small elite group of men, he was regarded as a physical phenomenon.
