Customs and Excise

a UK government department responsible for the administration and collection of REVENUES from VALUE ADDED TAX, EXCISE DUTIES and CUSTOMS DUTIES. The department is responsible for policing and enforcing the revenue laws and restrictions and prohibitions on the IMPORT and EXPORT of certain goods, as well as for the control of smuggling. Customs and Excise also provides statistical details of taxes raised and the volume and value of UK overseas trade; these are used by the Treasury or the Office for National Statistics in compiling budget and balance of payments returns. Customs and Excise

The agency also enforces the laws regarding the import and export of certain goods, collects IMPORT DUTIES and seeks to prevent attempts to avoid paying import duties by smuggling.
