Arkadii Nikitich Vorobev

Vorob’ev, Arkadii Nikitich

 

Born Oct. 3, 1924, in the village of Mordovo, Tambov Oblast. Soviet sportsman (weight lifter); Honored Master of Sport (1952) and Honored Coach of the USSR (1964).

Vorob’ev, a medical doctor, has been a member of the CPSU since 1954. Champion of the USSR ten times, Vorob’ev was the first Soviet light heavyweight weight lifter to win the world championship. He was world champion (1953-55, 1957-58) and champion of the sixteenth and seventeenth Olympics (1956, Melbourne; 1960, Rome) in the light heavyweight category. His highest total in the triathlon was 472.5 kg (1960). Vorob’ev was awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and medals.
