Caballero

 

a knight in medieval Spain. In the early periodof the Reconquista, the term referred to a mounted soldier whopurchased weapons and a horse and its gear at his own expense, in order to participate in the wars. Since around the 12th century, the word hidalgo has been used in the same sense as caballero.
