Dothan (dō`thən), city (1990 pop. 53,589), seat of Houston co., SE Ala., near the Fla. line, in a timber and peanut-growing area; inc. 1885. It is the industrial and farm trade center of the region. Among its diverse manufactures are fertilizer, motor vehicle parts, and processed food. A nuclear power plant and a campus of Troy State Univ. are in Dothan. There are hot mineral springs, and a national peanut festival is held annually.
Dothan (dō`thăn) or Dothaim (dōthā`ĭm), city, central ancient Palestine, in the uplands NE of Samaria. In the Bible, it was in the vicinity of Dothan that Joseph was sold into slavery and that the Syrians were blinded by Elisha's prayer. The site has been partially excavated. |
