A chimpanzee from the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center at Emory University, which was inoculated with HIV in 1985; in 1995, it developed AIDS, manifested as:• A decline in CD4+ cells;
• An increase in viral loads in plasma;
• Presence of a virus, HIV-1JC, which is cytopathic for chimpanzee peripheral blood mononuclear cells; and
• The presence of an opportunistic infection and blood dyscrasias.
Other chimps were likely to develop AIDS as well, making them good research models.
