Location:At the mouth of Tampa Bay, southwest of Fort DeSoto Beach; accessible only by private boat.
Facilities:Beach, nature trails, picnic tables.
Activities:Boating, fishing (in designated areas), swimming (in designated areas), hiking, wildlife viewing.
Special Features:Though it isprimarily a wildlife refuge, Egmont Key has a working lighthouse that has stoodsince 1858. During the 19th Century, the island was a camp for capturedSeminoles at the end of the Third Seminole War, and later it was occupiedby the Navy during the Civil War. In 1898 Fort Dade was built there andremained active until 1923.
