Established: 1974.
Location:Offshore from Saint Petersburg, Florida, at the mouth of Tampa Bay.
Facilities:Trails, beach, historic features.
Activities:Boating, fishing, diving/snorkeling, hiking, educational programs.
Special Features:Refuge includes the remains of Fort Dade, built to protect Tampa after the outbreak of the Spanish-American War. Egmont Key is also the site of a Florida state park (see Egmont Key entry in Florida state parks section).
Habitats: 328-acre island.
Access: Daylight hours; accessible by boat only.
Wild life: Brown pelicans, terns, gopher tortoises, and other colonial nesting water birds.
