, 1696–1785, English general and philanthropist, founder of the American colony of Georgia. He had some military experience before being elected (1722) to the House of Commons, where he held a seat for 32 years.

 in founding Georgia. Elected (1727) to the British House of Commons, he served on Oglethorpe's committee investigating penal conditions. He was first president of the trustees of Georgia and kept a journal of their transactions, most of which has been published.
