[< German (1905) < Greek diplóos double, with suffix of German haploid haploid] dip•loi′dic, adj. dip·loid (dĭp′loid′) Having two sets of each chromosome in a cell or cell nucleus, one set from the female parent and one set from the male parent. In animals, all cells except reproductive cells are diploid. Compare haploid. See Note at mitosis.diploidHaving two sets of chromosomes in the nucleus.ThesaurusNoun | 1. | diploid - (genetics) an organism or cell having the normal amount of DNA per cell; i.e., two sets of chromosomes or twice the haploid numberorganism, being - a living thing that has (or can develop) the ability to act or function independentlygenetic science, genetics - the branch of biology that studies heredity and variation in organisms | Adj. | 1. | diploid - of a cell or organism having two sets of chromosomes or twice the haploid number; "diploid somatic cells"genetic science, genetics - the branch of biology that studies heredity and variation in organismshaploid, haploidic, monoploid - of a cell or organism having a single set of chromosomespolyploid - of a cell or organism having more than twice the haploid number of chromosomes; "a polyploid cell"; "a polyploid species" | Translationsdiploid
diploid Biology (of cells or organisms) having pairs of homologous chromosomes so that twice the haploid number is present Diploid an organism whose cells have a double (diploid; 2n) set of chromosomes, representing a single (haploid; n) set of paired homologous chromosomes. For example, man has 23 pairs of chromosomes (n = 23’,2n = 46), and an onion has eight pairs of chromosomes (n = 8; 2n = 16). The transition from the diploid state (diplophase) to the haploid (haplo-phase) is accomplished by the first meiotic division, as a result of which the sex cells, or gametes, are formed. When the gametes fuse, the diploid number of chromosomes is restored. diploid[′di‚plȯid] (crystallography) A crystal form in the isometric system having 24 similar quadrilateral faces arranged in pairs. (genetics) Having two complete chromosome pairs in a nucleus (2N). diploid
diploid [dip´loid] 1. having a pair of each chromosome characteristic of a species (2n or, in man, 46).2. a diploid individual or cell.dip·loid (dip'loyd), Denoting the state of a cell containing two haploid sets derived from the father and from the mother respectively; the normal chromosome complement of somatic cells (in humans, 46 chromosomes). Genetics Having a pair of each type of chromosome, so that the basic chromosome number is doubled: diploid somatic cells.n. Genetics A cell, organism, or group of organisms having a diploid number of chromosomes.diploid adjective Referring to diploidy, see there. noun Having 2 haploid sets of chromosomes, one from an egg, one from spermdip·loid (dip'loyd) Denoting the state of a cell containing two haploid sets derived from the father and from the mother respectively; the normal chromosome complement of somatic cells (in humans, 46 chromosomes). [diplo- + G. eidos resemblance]diploid Having an identical (homologous) pair of chromosomes for each characteristic except sex. This is the normal state of most body cells. Eggs and sperms, however, have only a single set of half the number of chromosomes, and are said to be haploid. Red blood cells have no chromosomes.diploid - (of a cell nucleus) containing two of each type of chromosome in homologous pairs and formed as a result of sexual reproduction.
- an organism in which the main life stage has cell nuclei with two of each type of chromosome, written as 2n. Diploid stages occur in all EUKARYOTES apart from certain fungi, and allow a greater degree of genetic variability in individuals than the HAPLOID (2) state (n).
