Chain Stitch in machine sewing, a section of a stitch between two needle holes, made with the help of a looper. In chain stitches, the threads are interlinked on one side of the material only; the types of stitch on the face and back (underside) are different. Chain stitches can be made with one, two, or several threads. They allow a significant amount of stretch along the stitch and are therefore usually used in sewing elastic, primarily knitted, fabrics. Their greatest disadvantages are that they ravel easily and they require a greater expenditure of thread than do lockstitches. chain stitch
