Chaffee, Zechariah

(1885–1957) lawyer, educator; born in Providence, R.I. He graduated from Brown in 1907 and later from Harvard Law School, and joined the law faculty at Harvard in 1916. His book Freedom of Speech (1920) established him as a leading legal thinker on civil liberties issues. He later served on national and international commissions on freedom of the press.
