Egg Fu
Egg Fu (pop culture)Part Fu Manchu, part Humpty Dumpty, the obscure DC Comics supervillain Egg Fu succeeded in slaughtering both Wonder Woman and political correctness. Hatched by writer Robert Kanigher and artists Ross Andru and Mike Esposito in Wonder Woman vol. 1 #157–#158 (1965), the “Oriental Egghead” is an observatory-sized, egg-shaped mastermind on the island of Oolong who strikes a blow against democracy for his native Communist China by turning “America's greatest hero” Lt. Steve Trevor, boyfriend of the Amazon Princess, into a living bomb. When Wonder Woman attempts Trevor's rescue, both perish in an explosion, but are reconstructed by Amazonian science. The embodiment of every off-color, World War II–bred Asian stereotype imaginable (including speech, swapping Ls for Rs: “The Amelicans would be warned if the locket were fired at rong range!”), the smirking, orange-skinned Egg Fu next ensnares Wonder Woman and Trevor in his telescoping “mustache trap” before the heroine cracks the villain into tiny pieces with her magic lasso. In Wonder Woman #165 (1966), Kanigher and company served up Egg Fu the Fifth, a smaller version of the villain, closer to human size—but no closer to avoiding the same offensive clichés. Wonder Woman scrambled version five, but Egg Fu managed yet another go-round as a supercomputer with ties to Darkseid (Wonder Woman vol. 2 #129, 1998). |
