Chabanenko, Andrei Trofimovich

Born Oct. 17 (30), 1909, in the city of Verkhnedneprovsk, in what is now Dnepropetrovsk Oblast. Soviet military commander; admiral (1953). Member of the CPSU since 1932.

The son of a worker, Chabanenko enlisted in the navy in 1927. He graduated from the M. V. Frunze Naval School in 1931 and completed the academic courses for officers at the Naval Academy in 1931 and at the K. E. Voroshilov Higher Military Academy in 1950.

Beginning in 1933, Chabanenko served as submarine commander in the Black Sea Fleet, and beginning in 1938, as submarine division commander in the Pacific Ocean Fleet. From 1940 to 1945 he commanded a submarine brigade in the Pacific Ocean Fleet. After the Great Patriotic War (1941–45), he served as commander of a number of bases. In 1951–52 he was chief of the naval staff, and from 1952 to 1962 he commanded the entire Northern Fleet. In July 1962 he was named deputy chief for the navy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR. In 1972 he became a consultant to the K. E. Voroshilov Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR.

Chabanenko was a candidate member of the Central Committee of the CPSU from 1961 to 1966. He has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, four Orders of the Red Banner, the Order of the Patriotic War Second Class, two orders of the Red Star, the Order for Service to the Motherland in the Armed Forces of the USSR Third Class, and various medals.
