Coffin, William Anderson,

1855–1925, American landscape and figure painter and art critic, studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts and under Léon BonnatBonnat, Léon Joseph Florentin
, 1833–c.1922, French portrait and historical painter. He is best known for his portraits of famous men, including Thiers, Victor Hugo, and Dumas fils. Bonnat is represented in the Metropolitan Museum.

 in Paris. His landscapes were awarded numerous medals and high honors, and are in the collections of many museums. Among his works are Evening, Somerset Valley (c.1898, exhibited 1905), Dawn, October Frost and Flame Hill (exhibited 1906), Uplands in April (exhibited 1911), and End of the Storm (exhibited 1913). He served as art critic on the New York Evening Post, the Nation, and the New York Sun, as art director of the Buffalo Exposition (1901), and on the advisory board of the Pan-Pacific Exposition (1915).
